Theater Review A Slog Through the Exquisite Linguistic Underbrush That Is ‘Cymbeline’ Published: December 17, 2006 www.nytimes.com/2006/12/17/nyregion/nyregionspecial2/ The poet Alfred Lord Tennyson said “Cymbeline” was his favorite among Shakespeare’s plays. George Bernard Shaw, on the other hand, found the convoluted unraveling of its final act stale and filled with nothing more than “infantile joys”: A pair of long-lost brothers suddenly reappears; one villain is transformed into a penitent, and the second, a stepmother-from-hell, conveniently expires in a mad fit; and a wife dutifully and docilely accepts her husband’s attempt to have her murdered. As I watched the Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey’s robust, if ultimately tedious, production of “Cymbeline,” the words of my ancient Russian piano teacher, Madame Rosina Lhevinne, came to mind. When I presented her with an obscure Mozart fugue as a candidate for an upcoming recital, she cautioned, “When a piece is not played, dear, there are good reasons.” “Cymbeline” is rarely performed, and it is easy to see why. Reading the text, one is immediately struck by the exquisite imagery of some of the verses but stymied by the density of much of the language. Straightforward dialogues turn into impenetrable thickets that no number of explanatory notes can penetrate. I found myself questioning — along with numerous critics, I might add — whether the work is totally Shakespeare’s or perhaps the product of a collaboration with a lesser talent. There are moments of genuine humor provided by a clueless King Cymbeline (Richard Bourg in a guffaw-producing, though occasionally unintelligible, performance) and his vain and boorish stepson, Cloten, (pronounced “Clotten” to rhyme with rotten, and played accordingly by a very funny Mark H. Dold). Then, too, there is the dramatic payback of the ferocious Act V battle scenes strikingly choreographed by the director, Joe Discher, and the fight director, Rick Sordelet. Still, “Cymbeline” remains a questionable choice for the Shakespeare Theater’s December slot. Billed as “sure to entertain all ages,” this does not really fit the family-friendly label. Some judicious editing, more visual punch and additional musical interludes might have turned this fairy tale of sorts — wicked stepmother, powerful sleeping potions, a puzzling riddle — into an audience-pleasing winner. For now we must be content with a rather pedestrian play in a production that neither offends nor exhilarates. While the ensemble is generally excellent, some casting decisions could be challenged. Charlotte Parry as Imogen the princess and Derek Wilson as Posthumus Leonatus, her “poor but worthy” husband banished by the king as punishment for marrying his daughter, are both gifted actors. As a pair, however, they lack the chemistry and ardor that these two young lovers should exude. Delphi Harrington’s evil queen, second wife to Cymbeline, is drawn in such broad strokes that her character is turned into a cartoon. On the positive side are the gentle perseverance of Michael Stewart Allen as Pisanio, servant to Posthumus; the dignity and quiet reserve of Mark Elliot Wilson in the role of Belarius, a nobleman banished by the king; and the cavalier loutishness of Robert Gomes playing Iachimo, an “Italian gentleman” who is no gentleman but proves capable of repentance. “Cymbeline” is at the Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey, 36 Madison Avenue, Madison (on the Drew University campus), through Dec. 31; www.shakespeareNJ.org. Iedereen gelijkwaardig bij Lotus 16 december 2006, www.destentor.nl/zwolle/ door JANINE STOUGIE ZWOLLE - Ze doen vooral leuke dingen met elkaar, maar juist daardoor leren ze meer en meer over de Nederlandse samenleving. Want hoewel iedereen schijnt te denken dat het Chinese contingent in Nederland aardig ingeburgerd is, spreken ook veel jongere Chinezen nog altijd niet de Nederlandse taal. Lotus heet de club, die een jaar geleden met acht Chinese dames begon, maar inmiddels zo’n veertig leden telt. Niet alleen Chinese Zwollenaren, maar ook een behoorlijk aantal autochtone, Surinaamse, Antilliaanse en Marokkaanse stadsgenoten maken er deel vanuit. Elke zondag verzamelen ze zich in de sporthal van wijkcentrum Gerenlanden in Zwolle-Zuid. Tai chi is de gemeenschappelijke deler, maar ze doen met elkaar spelletjes, er wordt gedanst en op geheel vrijwillige basis kan er Nederlandse les gevolgd worden. Een paar dames van het vrouwennetwerk NVVH geeft les in dagelijkse situaties. ‘Daar leren we toch het meeste van’, meent voorzitster Nioutze Ho. Zelf spreekt ze uiterst charmant Nederlands met een Frans-Chinees accent. ‘Ik ben zelf in Parijs geboren. Dankzij mijn Nederlandse echtgenoot heb ik de taal goed geleerd. Het is vooral een kwestie van doen, maar dan moet je natuurlijk wel in je dagelijkse leven met elkaar in contact komen. Dat is toch vaak niet zo.’ Veel Chinezen in Nederland werken nog altijd in de horeca, maar daar blijft de communicatie over het algemeen beperkt tot babi pangang en sambal bij. Nioutze Ho en haar club zijn niet alleen bezig met Nederlands leren, maar vooral ook met hun gezondheid. ‘Tai chi is heel gezond. Dat willen wij graag op de Nederlandse samenleving overbrengen.’ Binnenkort gaan ze ook allerlei authentieke gerechten met elkaar uitwisselen. Het schept duidelijk een band. ‘We leren van elkaar’, bevestigen Anja Reijnhoudt, Janna Posthumus en Jan Smits. ‘Soms verstaan we elkaar niet, maar met non-verbale communicatie kom je heel ver.’ In de Nederlandse samenleving wordt alles in hokjes en vormpjes gegoten, meent het trio. ‘Je hoort bij een sportclub met allemaal dezelfde soort mensen. Het is allemaal zo afgebakend. Hier loopt alles en iedereen door elkaar heen. Dat maakt het leuk. En interessant. We zijn hier ook niet bezig met arme allochtoontjes helpen. Ondanks de verschillen is iedereen bij Lotus gelijkwaardig.’ Speciaal voor de ouderen, verenigd in Het Zonnetje, komt dinsdag 19 december een Chinese dokter naar het Chinese restaurant in de Sassenstraat om te praten over gezondheidsproblemen die alles te maken hebben met eten en verkeerd bewegen. Geen strafbare feitenOfficier van Justitie en Advocaat in zaak Parkmoord 13 december 2006, www.emea.nl/ De Rijksrecherche en het OM Utrecht hebben onderzoek gedaan naar strafbare feiten die gepleegd zouden zijn tijdens de opsporing en vervolging van verdachte Kees B., die ten onrechte werd veroordeeld voor de Schiedammer parkmoord. Conclusie van het OM Utrecht is dat niet is gebleken van enig door de officier van justitie (de zaaks-OvJ) of de Advocaat-Generaal (de zaaks-AG) gepleegd strafbaar feit. Het OM Utrecht zal geen strafvervolging tegen hen instellen. De conclusie dat er geen strafbare feiten zijn gepleegd door de zaaks-OvJ en de zaaks-AG doet niets af aan de bevindingen en conclusies van de commissie Posthumus ten aanzien van de professionaliteit die van het OM en andere actoren in de strafrechtspleging mag worden verwacht. . . . Deze conclusie van het OM Utrecht uit het strafrechtelijk onderzoek doet voor wat betreft de DNA-kwestie niets af aan de conclusies van Posthumus. In het onderzoek tegen Kees B. is onvoldoende gewicht toegekend aan het feit dat er geen technisch bewijs (DNA-sporen) tegen hem aanwezig was. De afwezigheid van sporen die te herleiden waren tot Kees B., alsmede de aanwezigheid van een aantal DNA-profielen dat afkomstig was van een ander dan Kees B., alsmede de discussie binnen het NFI over de herkomst van een belangrijk daderspoor op de veter, hadden aanleiding moeten zijn tot nader onderzoek. De relevantie hiervan blijkt uit de afloop van de zaak. Kees B. is ten onrechte veroordeeld. In de zaak tegen Wik H. is bij nieuw onderzoek aan de veter die om de hals van het dodelijke slachtoffer werd aangetroffen, slechts zwak DNA-bewijs tegen Wik H. gevonden. Wel werd een volledig DNA-profiel van Wik H. gevonden bij nieuw onderzoek aan de kleding van het slachtoffer. . . . In het kader van het rapport-Posthumus (Evaluatieonderzoek in de Schiedammer parkmoord, 13 september 2005) is een hele reeks maatregelen uitgewerkt in het programma ‘Versterking opsporing en vervolging’. Het betreft maatregelen ter verbetering van de kwaliteit en professionaliteit in de strafrechtketen. Omdat Kees B.later niets met de moord te maken bleek te hebben, is een strafrechtelijk onderzoek gedaan. Er zijn geen strafbare feiten boven water gekomen en ook zijn de blunders niet aan gebrek aan integriteit te wijten, zeggen Openbaar Ministerie en Rijksrecherche. Naar aanleiding van het rapport van de commissie-Posthumus over deze zaak, zijn bij het Openbaar Ministerie maatregelen genomen om zulke fouten te voorkomen. Constant cameratoezicht voor verdachte schoolmoord ANP 13 december 2006, www.volkskrant.nl/binnenland/ BREDA/HOOGERHEIDE - De 22-jarige J.C., verdacht van de moord op de 8-jarige Jesse Dingemans op diens school in Hoogerheide, zit onder continu cameratoezicht in zijn cel. Justitie is bang dat de man zichzelf iets aandoet, zei zijn advocaat Henk van Asselt woensdag. Ook bij het overleg dat de advocaat met zijn cliënt voert, staan camera's, aldus Van Asselt. Het geluid wordt niet opgenomen. Justitie wil de gesprekken uit voorzorg zien, maar de raadsman verklaarde woensdag dat hij niks heeft te vrezen van de verdachte. J.C. verschijnt woensdag voor de raadkamer van de rechtbank in Breda. De rechter moet beslissen over de verlenging van de voorlopige hechtenis van de verdachte. De verdachte ontkent nog steeds, blijft bij zijn 'bizarre verhaal' en hult zich inmiddels in een groot stilzwijgen. Het besluit van de rechtbank volgt donderdag. Van Asselt klaagde woensdag over de glazen wand die hem van de verdachte scheidt. 'Het is lastig om zo het dossier te bespreken.' De advocaat zal zich er vooralsnog niet formeel over beklagen. Hoogleraar forensische psychologie Corine de Ruiter heeft de verhoren van de verdachte bijgewoond, onthulde Van Asselt. Zij zit er bij om te voorkomen dat politie en justitie hem in één richting sturen. Volgens Van Asselt is de aanwezigheid van een psycholoog bij verhoren van een meerderjarige verdachte hoogst ongebruikelijk. Justitie heeft de hulp van De Ruiter ingeroepen naar aanleiding van de dwalingen in de Schiedammer Parkmoord en de daarop volgende aanbevelingen van de commissie-Posthumus. Opmerkelijk is dat De Ruiter indertijd kritiek had op kinderpsycholoog Ruud Bullens die volgens haar onterecht niet ingreep tijdens het harde verhoor van slachtoffer Maikel. In de loop van afgelopen week werd al duidelijk dat justitie topprioriteit geeft aan de gruwelijke schoolmoord. Vijf officieren van justitie, dertig rechercheurs plus een schaduwteam zijn ingezet. Schaduwteam in moordzaak Jesse 12 december 2006, www.rtl.nl/(/actueel/rtlnieuws/) Het onderzoek naar de moord op de 8-jarige Jesse uit Hoogerheide wordt gevolgd door een speciaal team van politie en justitie. Fouten Dit gebeurt om fouten in het onderzoek, zoals in de Schiedammer parkmoord, te voorkomen. Dat meldt het Openbaar Ministerie. Het team bestaat uit een officier van justitie en een aantal rechercheurs die niet bij het onderzoek betrokken zijn. Aanbeveling Bij het onderzoek naar de moord zijn vijf officieren van justitie en ruim 30 rechercheurs betrokken. Het schaduwteam is een van de aanbevelingen van de commissie-Posthumus. DTS behaalt punten in thuisduel zondag 10 december 2006 Surhuisterveen, www.waldnet.nl/wn/nieuws/ Zaterdag speelde DTS haar thuiswedstrijd in de Surventohal in Surhuisterveen tegen SIM. De ploeg uit Haskerdijken had vorige week verrassend gelijk gespeeld tegen de Parabool, dus wist DTS dat ze SIM niet moesten onderschatten, ondanks dat de ploeg mede onderaan staat. DTS speelde in een iets gewijzigde opstelling, Berber v/d Veen speelde voor Hieke Bruining, Tjebbe Posthumus verving Jouke Spoelstra en Anton Postma speelde op de plek van Hendrik Hein de Vries. Ondanks deze wijziging lieten de Surhuizumers zich niet van de wijs brengen en wist ook deze wedstrijd de beide punten te behalen door te winnen met 14-10. In de eerste minuten van de wedstrijd was het nog even naar elkaar zoeken, maar uiteindelijk kon Albert Wagenaar als eerste een kans benutten. Al snel stond er 3-0 op het scorebord. Even kon SIM bijna aansluiting maken door de stand op 4-3 te spelen, maar verdedigend zat DTS er goed bij, en wist te voorkomen dat SIM langs zij zou komen. Nu was het de taak voor DTS SIM niet in de wedstrijd te laten komen, en te verslappen, want dan zou SIM nog wel eens voor een verrassing kunnen zorgen. Concern at state of metered taxi industry in city PORT ELIZABETH Saturday December 9, 2006 www.theherald.co.za/herald/news/ THE metered taxi industry in the Eastern Cape is in tatters and will need to shape up before 2010, says Transport Safety and Security MEC Thobile Mhlahlo. This was because of concerns that the industry had been left alone to fend for itself without any proper regulations, despite the fact that the Transport Board was responsible for monitoring and policing the industry‘s activities, he said. “There is a strategy to overhaul the decrepit public transport system before the 2010 Soccer World Cup, and beyond. The entire taxi industry has to be revamped to be able to offer a useful service. There will be a reassessment and taxis which fail to meet the minimum safety requirements will be impounded and their licences will be revoked,” he said. It was not about 2010 only, but also safety. Unlike the government‘s taxi recapitalisation programme, metered taxis will have to upgrade their own vehicles and will get no scrapping allowance should any of them be declared unroadworthy. A survey by The Herald showed that the industry in Nelson Mandela Bay was in disarray, with many taxis decrepit. There was no association watching the industry‘s interests and conduct. No one knew how many metered taxis there were. The operators charged whatever fee they deemed fit and most of the drivers did not get a minimum wage. “This industry needs regulation,” said Johan Posthumus, who drives his own taxi. “We must have an inspector and he must stop all taxis and check if they meet all the requirements. Many guys are operating without licences. It‘s very dangerous. “Can you imagine if the taxi was involved in an accident? The only recourse to the passenger would the Road Accident Fund.” The industry was casually divided into three categories – those who complied with laws, those who partially complied and illegal fly-by-nights, often called “ “pirates” or “cockroaches”. Loyiso Moli admitted to operating illegally. “I started in April. I haven‘t bought a meter yet and I don‘t have a permit, but I will go and fetch it on Monday. It‘s illegal but I can‘t sit at home and do nothing.” He said he was not worried as there were many operators like him. Dennis Hurter, owner of Hurter Cabs, attributed the problems to the lack of law enforcement. “Operating illegally is detrimental to the industry. They overcharge clients and it doesn‘t do the industry any credit.” Hurter and Posthumus said that some of the pirates even went as far as robbing tourists and were also notorious for willingly transporting druglords and prostitutes. Mhlahlo, who is also engaged in revitalising some defunct railway lines in the province, said a good and reliable transport system meant a good economy. King Cymbeline’s sons Guiderius and Arviragus were kidnapped 20 years ago, leaving his daughter Imogen as his only heir. He wants Imogen to marry his Queen's son, Cloten (a son from a previous marriage). However, Imogen is madly in love with an Italian commoner named Posthumus Leonatus and marries him. This enrages Cymbeline and he banishes Posthumus. Over de luxe (arrestanten kunnen onder meer computerspelletjes spelen en beperkt televisie kijken) zijn door het CDA vragen gesteld in de Tweede Kamer. Bij de officiële opening gisteren legde plaatsvervangend korpschef Martin Sitalsing uit dat er niets nieuws onder de zon is. Het arrestantencomplex in Drachten is gebouwd naar voorbeeld van dat van Amsterdam Osdorp. Daar is nauwelijks ophef over geweest. Ter vergelijking werden er foto’s getoond. Volgens de politie zijn de 22 cellen comfortabel ingericht omdat de arrestant (dat is een verdachte en geen veroordeelde) wordt gezien als een gast, en om schade door vernieling tot een minimum te beperken. Onderzoek heeft uitgewezen dat dat werkt. In de cellen zijn de agressietemperende kleuren beige en lichtgroen gebruikt. Bovendien zijn de cellen aangepast aan alle eisen op het gebied van veiligheid voor arrestanten en bewaarders, die de commissie-Posthumus (naar aanleiding van de verhoren in de Schiedamse parkmoord) en de commissie-Van Vollenhove (naar aanleiding van de brand op het cellencomplex op Schiphol-Oost) hebben gesteld.
